Externship in Laboratory Animal Medicine
The practice of laboratory animal medicine requires a combination of preventive programs, clinical skills, knowledge of various species' biology, familiarity with research methodology, and acquaintance with state and federal regulations. This program is offered as a two-week introduction to that specialty. We offer:
- A web-based introduction to the care and use of research animals
- Hands-on sessions on basic or advanced techniques in rodents and rabbits
- Training in rodent surgery
- Training in pain assessment and analgesia
- Visits to other institutions
- Assigned readings and tutoring (topics such as genetically engineered mice, health monitoring, environmental enrichment, anesthesia, animal facility design and concept, etc)
- Evaluation of animal use protocols and discussion
- Daily participation in clinical and round visits
Maximum enrollment of 2 students per rotation.
