Sponsored Projects Brio

Description

Brio provides access to pre-formatted reports extracted from the Sponsored Projects Data Warehouse as well as the ability to perform adhoc queries against the database without knowing the database programming language SQL. Standard data models define the logical relationships between Sponsored Projects tables and include generally useful reports. A major strength of Brio is the ability to start with a report already written and modify it to meet your own needs. Brio is the appropriate tool for selecting records to export to a spreadsheet or desktop database system. Brio is also used as an interface to other Cornell data warehouses, such as Accounting, Budget and Student.

Note: The Brio product was purchased by Hyperion in 2005. While the products have all been re-labeled with Hyperion brand names, at Cornell the Brio tools are still referred to by their original names. In 2007 Oracle announced interest in purchasing Hyperion so another name change may be coming.

How You Can Use Brio

  • Look up individual and/or large batches of proposals and awards based on criteria you define in queries.
  • Create reports defined by your own criteria, with the option of presenting the data in a variety of formats (charts, pivot reports, with many options for formatting).
  • Save the queries and reports you create as templates so that you can process them as needed.

Technology

Brio is a current generation reporting tool. At Cornell it is used to provide a common interface to a number of data warehouses including the Accounting, Budget and Student. Most people at Cornell use Brio Insight, a browser plug-in that runs under Internet Explorer version 6. For general information about Brio at Cornell see the Brio user support Web site.

Access, User Support and Training

Brio requires some basic understanding of the data in the warehouse and use of the tool. Users are required to attend a training class before Brio access is granted. General data access must also be granted. See the Sponsored Data Warehouse user support page for complete information. Registration for upcoming Sponsored Project Brio workshops is available online.
